Free image sites: a step into the unknown?
You're thinking of using free image sites such as Pixabay or Unsplash. Find out how they perform & what to look out for vs standard stock image sites.
www.pixabay.com is a website which hosts high resolution photographs, illustrations, vector graphics and video footage. The site holds over 850,000 free images, illustrations and vectors and currently holds around 4,400 videos. Those numbers are shooting up fast.
Another favourite of ours is www.unsplash.com, it’s similar to the Pixabay site, however it currently only holds photos, as opposed to Pixabay which also provides videos, vectors and illustrations. In addition, as Unsplash is newer, the number of photos available is smaller than Pixabay. However, the site offers a wide range of stunning image collections from business and law to urban scenes and people.
In this blog post, we look at how Pixabay and Unsplash compare, using a tick box table and looking at attributes such as their functionality and suitability for commercial use.
Check out our table below where we compare the two.
We also highlight some other free photo sites that can be used for commercial use, for example, to accompany posts on social media sites.
Refer to our previous blog post where we address copyright governing the use of images and be sure to check the Ts and Cs of individual image houses before use.
If you need expert copyright help, our go-to source is Clare Painter of Clare Painter Associates.
Other sites providing some access to free images include:
Be sure to check the terms and conditions of each site carefully to ensure you don’t infringe copyright.
